Daily Treatment Activities at The Blackberry Center

Across every mental health treatment modality, one thing is consistent: structure. To help patients recover, our care staff provides them with engaging, structured daily activities. If you want to know about the daily treatments and therapies that you can expect at The Blackberry Center, then look no further! Each treatment program is customized to meet the patient’s unique needs and goals, but these are the various evidence-based recovery programs that we provide.

Community Meetings in the Mornings and Evenings

In these daily, patient-driven meetings, patients are encouraged to discuss any community issues related to individual, group, or unit-wide rules, infractions, etc. Not only do these meetings give everyone a chance to voice their questions and concerns, but they help our staff provide the best possible care.

We hold these meetings twice per day to circumvent problems in the morning and promptly address any issues in the evening. Additionally, each meeting is overseen and guided by a mental health technician.

After each morning meeting, patients also fill out daily Goal Sheets. These important recovery tools detail each patient’s short-term goals for that day. This both keeps our patients focused on recovery and informs our staff of how they can best facilitate each patient’s progress.

Dual Diagnosis Addiction Recovery Care

In addition to our mental health programs, patients with substance use disorder can receive help that addresses their addictions. This process treats co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders by helping patients identify and confront the underlying causes of addiction.

Each session is led by an addiction specialist, licensed nurse, or social worker, and they work to help residents progress in their recovery journeys. For more information about our dual diagnosis programming, click here.

Group Therapy

When patients attend group therapy, they have the opportunity to share common experiences and voice their feelings. In this way, patients identify harmful thoughts and behaviors and learn how to break free of those patterns.

At appropriate intervals, staff members provide feedback to facilitate awareness and improvement among group members. To ensure that all guidance is provided by professionals, group therapy is always guided by an addiction specialist, licensed nurse, or social worker.

Nutrition and Health Education

Nutrition and Health Education

In this treatment, a licensed nurse shares useful nutrition and wellness advice with our patients. Additionally, our patients learn healthy techniques that promote positive self-image and all-around wellness. This includes a review of the negative effects that poor self-care can have on mental health.

Recreational Therapy

Recreational therapy is our patients’ time to have fun while still working toward recovery. Treatment modalities may consist of:

Sports

Drama

Games

Art exercises

All of these lead patients to improve their social skills, develop confidence, and foster meaningful relationships. Each therapy activity is facilitated by a recreational therapist, and patients can choose activities based on their abilities, needs, and interests.

Life Skills/Coping Skills/Psychoeducational Activities

In these treatment modalities, patients are taught new coping skills to help them with life after treatment. These behavioral health exercises help patients create balance in their lives by giving them engaging activities administered by a licensed nurse.

Discharge Planning

Unfortunately, no mental health treatment can completely get rid of mental illness. That’s why our staff members meet with patients to discuss their post-recovery plans. During aftercare planning, a social worker and/or discharge planner will work with each patient to ensure that their life after discharge will include:

  • Time for physical activity
  • Community resources, like support groups
  • Leisure activities
  • Continued sources of psychiatric support and, if necessary, medications

Journaling

Patients are regularly encouraged to record their thoughts, feelings, and progress as they go through treatment. Not only does this help patients process their emotions, but it’s also a useful tool in their everyday lives.

When patients are speaking with doctors, social workers, or any other professional who helps them with recovery, they often receive a lot of questions. These questions could be about their mental health, their symptoms, etc. In cases like these, it’s helpful if patients have journals to refer to so that they don’t forget any information. This creates a higher quality of care for the patient and removes possible roadblocks to treatment.
